Sources: NASCAR close to moving Clash’s exhibition to Los Angeles

The Athletic reports that NASCAR is closing in on a deal to transform its season-opening race into a major Hollywood event.

The sanctioning body is in talks to move Clash from the Daytona International Speedway track to a specially-built short track within the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This facility has hosted some of the most important events in sports. NASCAR will hold the race in February, two weeks prior to the Feb. 20 Daytona 500. They also plan to use the event as a way to promote the Next Gen car and build excitement for the season. The next season is set to begin in 2022.

The exhibition race will feature NASCAR’s brand new car. However, some teams are hesitant about using the Next Gen in this event. It doesn’t award points and is likely to be high-contact due to the track’s tight confines.

The Coliseum hosted Super Bowls I and VII, the 1932 Summer Olympics and the 1984 Summer Olympics. It will host the 2028 Games and Games 3, 4, and 5, of the 1959 World Series. Since 1923, the Coliseum has been home to the USC football program. The NASCAR Cup Series race at Chicago’s Soldier Field was held on July 21, 1956. Now, the NASCAR team will attempt stadium racing again. The Coliseum track will be modeled after Bowman-Gray Stadium’s historic quarter-mile track that runs around the football field where Winston-Salem State University plays every fall.

The end of the long-running Daytona race is marked by Shifting The Clash from the Coliseum. From 1979 to 2020, the event was held on the oval. It then moved to the Daytona Road Course this season.

In the coming weeks, the complete 2022 Cup schedule will be available.
