Hawaiian Burger with Teriyaki Ketchup

A juicy, grilled burger with Hawaiian-style toppings: grilled pineapple, teriyaki-flavored ketchup, sweet onion and bacon.

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 Basic Burger Recipe
  • 4 slices bacon, cooked
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 4 slices fresh pineapple
  • 4 slices Vidalia or other sweet onion
  • 4 slices fresh tomato
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns

Preparation:
Follow the instructions for the Basic Burger Recipe and prepare the patties for grilling. While the burgers chill, combine the ketchup, soy sauce and honey and set aside.

Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to a medium-high temperature (about 400°F). Oil the grates and add the pineapple slices. Grill for 1-1/2 to 2 minutes per side, or until lightly browned. Transfer to a plate and set aside.

Re-oil the grates and add the burgers. Grill until you see juices start to accumulate on the top of the meat, approximately 4 minutes. Flip them over and top each with 1/4 cup of cheese after about 1 minute. Cook for another 1 to 2 minutes, to desired doneness. While the burgers rest, lightly toast the buns on the grill.

To serve, place a burger on each bun, add a slice each of pineapple, onion, tomato and bacon and top with ketchup.
